The main goal of the degree in ECS (European Computer Science Course) is to prepare Informatics/Computer Science Engineers for an international career.

To achieve this main goal, the specialization Artificial Intelligence and Databases held at DEIS (Department of Informatics and Systems), ISEC (Coimbra Institute of Engineering) from IPC (Polytechnic of Coimbra) focuses on:

• The development of knowledge in several areas including information systems, artificial intelligence, optimization and professional and ethical responsibilities of an engineer;
• The acquisition of life-long learning skills;
• An improved knowledge of European culture and foreign languages, including the Portuguese language.

The duration of the specialization is one year and, upon successful completion, students will get the degree from our institution.

All competencies and learning objectives are acquired and developed in Theoretical (T), Theoretical–Practical (TP), Practical (P) classes and in tutorial working hours. Assessment for each subject may include tests, assignments, and a final examination, among other means of assessment. The Project or Traineeships subject can be done in the department labs under the supervision of a professor, or in a company under the supervision of a professor, as well as a company supervisor.

The quality of ECS is monitored by the various academic boards from IPC and by the ECS international board made up of representatives of all universities involved.
